In order to prevent airlocks that lower heating effectiveness, a radiator air valve, also known as an air vent, mechanically releases trapped air from a radiator or heating system. It operates on the idea that air rises above water; as air gathers at the radiator's top, it forces a diaphragm or float mechanism inside the valve. In order to maintain a sealed and effective system, the valve opens to discharge air when the float falls due to air buildup and automatically closes once water reaches the vent.
